Montgomery County Community College invites the community to its students’ performances this spring starting with the Dance Ensemble Spring Concert on Friday, April 24, followed by the Chamber Strings Concert on Sunday, April 26, and concluding with the Performing Arts Showcase concerts on April 27, 29 and 30. All performances are held in the Science Center Theater, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell.
All of the concerts are free of charge and open to the public, but tickets are required. To order the free tickets, visit mc3.edu/livelyarts or call the box office at 215-641-6518. The Performing Arts Showcase, Dance and Chamber Strings concerts are presented at the end of every semester.
On Friday, April 24, at 8 p.m. the Dance Ensemble Spring Concert will feature many styles of dance, including ballet, modern, contemporary, and hip hop. Choreographed by the students, the dances encompass a range of themes, including springtime, robots, addiction, lost love, working at the diner, war and dancing with your fantasy girl.
On Sunday, April 26, at 4 p.m., the Chamber Strings Spring 2015 concert will feature the 30-piece orchestra under the direction of Dr. Elizabeth Guerriero. The orchestra will be performing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with guest soloist, violinist James Lyon. A faculty member of Penn State University’s School of Music, Lyon performs internationally as a violinist with the Castalia Trio and Duo Concertant, touring throughout Asia and Western Europe.
The Chamber Strings concert also will feature the student chamber groups, who will perform two new pieces, “Enrai” and “Forest Incantations,” and the Don Quixote Suite by Telemann. “Enrai” is a Japanese pop song arranged by graduating student Deanna Cantello. Deanna will pursue a bachelor’s degree in Accounting next year at Kutztown University with a minor in viola performance.
On Monday, April 27, at 12:30 p.m. students will present a one-hour matinee preview of the full shows. Come, relax and enjoy the performances of MCCC’s talented dance and choral students.
On Wednesday, April 29, at 7 p.m. the Performing Arts Showcase concert will feature the Chamber Strings under the direction of Dr. Guerriero, the Guitar Ensemble under the direction of Daniel S. Boring, and the Chamber and College Choirs under the direction of Andrew Kosciesza and accompanied by Nina Muto. The College Choir will be presenting the program, “Songs from Stage and Screen,” featuring the works from Broadway, Gilbert and Sullivan, and the movies. Chamber Choir will perform a cappella works from the renaissance, baroque and romantic repertory.
On Thursday, April 30, at 7 p.m. the Performing Arts Showcase concert will feature the Jazz Ensembles under the direction of Rob Haffley. The Jazz ensembles will perform selections by Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver and Joe Zawinul. Additionally, the program will feature jazz pianist, Jared Alston, who was recently accepted as a jazz piano major in Temple University’s undergraduate jazz program.
