Fine Arts Center Gallery to Host Dual Exhibit ‘Watermedia: Two Artists—Two Views’

by Diane VanDyke

Montgomery County Community College will host a dual exhibit featuring the artwork of Mel Fetterolf and Jim McFarlane from Wednesday, Aug. 29, through Saturday, Oct. 6, at the College’s Fine Arts Center Gallery, Central Campus, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell.

A “Meet the Artists” reception will be held Sunday, Sept. 23, from 1-3 p.m. with a gallery talk at 2 p.m. The exhibit and reception are open to the public and free of charge.

A nationally respected and admired artist, Mel Fetterolf’s professional career includes 15 years teaching at the University of the Arts and in the public school system, freelancing as a graphic designer/illustrator and exhibiting her paintings in numerous solo and juried shows. The diversity of media and styles she has explored and mastered as artist, designer and instructor is a distinguishing characteristic of her work. As a lyrical and sensitive artist, Fetterolf says she is attuned to the changing light and luminous colors that surround her. Her subject matter is as varied as the world she encounters. From the beaches of Florida to the mountains of Norway and the harbors of Italy and Greece, Mel captures the essence of the area.

Fetterolf is a Signature Member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society and the Philadelphia Watercolor Society. She has won numerous awards in selected group shows throughout the United States and her paintings are a valued part of private and corporate collections.

Nationally and internationally recognized watercolorist and teacher, James McFarlane says his paintings include both traditional representational paintings and nonobjective abstracts. His work is influenced by the beauty of his native Pennsylvania, as well as the richness of other places he has visited during his travels.

McFarlane is a Signature Member and current President of the American Watercolor Society, and a Signature Member of the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, the Philadelphia Watercolor Society, and the National Society of Painters of Casein and Acrylic. He is Past President of both the Philadelphia Water Color Society and the Greater Norristown Art League.
