Pianist and composer Randy Weston and his African Rhythms Quintet will take the stage at Montgomery County Community College’s Science Center Theater, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell, on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Lively Arts Series. Weston has been composing and playing music for six decades, establishing himself as one of the music industry’s most renowned jazz pianists.  His work encompasses the vast rhythmic heritage of Africa, combined with generations of American music.

Weston’s performance is supported by a grant from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through the Philadelphia Music Project.

Lila Downs

Latin Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter Lila Downs will bring her soaring voice to Montgomery County Community College’s Science Center Theater, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell, on Friday, Feb. 17 at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $28 general admission, $24 for seniors, $18 for students, and $12 for children under age 12. Describing her musical vision as being “anthropological in nature,” Downs blends traditional Mexican music with blue, jazz, soul African root, and even klezmer to create a truly unique fusion of international sounds.  Her work has been featured on soundtracks for such films as soundtracks of such films as “Tortilla Soup” and “Real Women Have Curves,” and she played a role in the film “Frida.” Downs sang “Burn it Blue” from the “Frida” soundtrack at the Academy Awards, becoming the first Mexican to perform on the telecast.
