Research shows that one of the major reasons students do not complete their college education is because of financial problems. Many students lack the skills to budget and manage their money or never had the opportunity or experience to make financial decisions on their own.
The College’s Financial Aid Office is proactively addressing this issue by offering all College students a free financial literacy course—The Navpoint Student Financial Lab Program, which is provided free of charge to all American Association of Community College members.
Students can access this free online Student Financial Lab 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This means students can complete the program at their convenience. Students received information about this valuable program, together with a personal access code, via email on Friday, Sept. 9.
While the program is not mandatory, the College strongly encourages all students to complete the entire course, which takes approximately 3.5 hours. The program’s Finance curriculum includes eight units with 28 self-study chapters. It also contains an interactive Budget Toolkit, which will help students develop a customized budget and receive a recommended spending plan for the future.
For students currently facing financial issues, the program includes a Counseling Services Center where they can receive immediate help through credit counseling, debt management, IRS tax counseling, bankruptcy information and various housing counseling programs.
The fourth component of the program, the Resource Center, provides students with access to hundreds of student resources. Students can apply what they learned in the Finance curriculum to their daily lives using these resources.
By providing students with these financial management skills, they will not only be able to continue their higher education and complete their degrees, but they will also be able to successfully achieve their life goals, without the stress of debt and financial problems.
