Rep. Kate Harper to Receive ‘Leading Women Award’

by Alana J. Mauger

Representative Kate Harper will be recognized with the Montgomery County Community College Leading Women Award during the Foundation’s 7th Annual Leading Women Symposium and Golf Experience on Thursday, June 2, at the Blue Bell Country Club.

The award recognizes Rep. Harper’s support of women’s programming at the College. Harper was a member of the steering committee – affectionately known as the “Founding Mothers” – of the College’s popular “Starting a Successful Woman-Owned Business” Program. To date, more than 300 aspiring female business owners have completed the program, resulting in 25 new businesses in the community. The program’s success led to the development of the Montgomery County Women-Owned Business Network, which is open to all female business owners in the region.

Rep. Harper has practiced law in Montgomery County for more than 25 years, and she is currently a partner at Timoney Knox LLP in Fort Washington, Pa. Prior to being elected to the General Assembly, she was a founding partner of a small law firm in Blue Bell – a role that enables her to fully understand the “entrepreneurial experience.”

The Leading Women Symposium and Golf Experience begins at 10:30 a.m. with a brunch symposium featuring keynote speaker Lynn M. Utter, the President and COO of Knoll North America.

At noon, experienced golfers are invited to play in the Leading Women Invitational, during which teams will compete in an 18-hole, informal team scramble. New and beginner golfers are invited to participate in a “Learning Women” program, during which they will receive basic game training by noted PGA and LPGA teaching professionals.

In conjunction with the Symposium and Golf Invitational, the Woman-Owned Business Network will be holding a Business Expo featuring the businesses, products and services of the various members.  The symposium concludes with a cocktail reception and awards banquet at 4:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the Leading Women Symposium and Golf Experience benefit the College’s Foundation in its support of career and leadership development programs for women.
